Macedonia is an autonomous city with a municipal/municipal government. The Summit County Auditor‘s city council represents the legislative side of the government, and the mayor represents the administrative side.

In 2018, the Macedonian City Council initiated a program allowing residents to have face-to-face interviews with a council member before each regular council meeting. The show is called “Council Office Hours” and starts at 6:30 pm. m. citizens are invited to meet with a council member to discuss any matter related to city business. Council members alternate their time on these nights.
The Macedonian City Council is a testament to our city’s democratic values. It is composed of five members, all of whom are freely elected by the residents. Municipal elections, held every November during years that are not divisible by two, provide an opportunity for residents to actively participate in shaping the city’s governance. The term of office is four years, and a staggered election system ensures a smooth transition of power. The Council’s responsibilities include the adoption of the annual budget, making laws, Confirming mayoral nominations, and setting policies.
The Macedonian City Council holds a variety of meetings to ensure transparency and encourage public participation. Regular board meetings, held at 7:30 pm on the second and fourth Thursday of each month, provide a platform for the Council to discuss and make decisions on city matters. Special meetings, committee meetings, and board business meetings are scheduled as needed, addressing specific issues and concerns. Public hearings, such as those on zoning matters, are also held. All sessions are open to the public, and regular meeting attendees who wish to speak can do so during the public comment portion of the meeting.
Official action by the Council may be a bylaw, a resolution, or a motion. It is only possible to amend a municipal ordinance or revoke it by enacting another one. A proposed agreement will require three separate readings in three days unless the Council renounces its rules. A resolution can express city policy, direct specific administrative or legal actions, or make a public statement. A request is a verbal instruction for a desired action.
